Aschaffeburg Kindergarten
Aschaffeburg Kindergarten
As part of the new social infrastructure to its urban extension along the River Main, the town of Aschaffenburg in north-west Bavaria held an architectural competition for a new kindergarten and drop-in family centre. Our entry was developed and submitted as part of a collaboration with our associated studio in Germany, son-tho Architekten.
The town’s historic but now neglected orchards and the teaching approach based on age-clusters are the starting points for organising the site. Enclosing the kindergarten in a new boundary wall with views to future community orchards, a protected landscape with sheltered learning terraces, natural play areas and rich habitats is proposed. Accommodation for the two youngest groups of children open directly onto their own learning terraces, while the third older group have a rooftop terrace and access via a stair to the wider landscape.
Opening directly onto the new town square is the foyer, hall and dining space, together with the drop-in centre. The larger spaces are capable of being opened up to create a large capacity room for special events, and a large window facing the square integrates the activities and events of the kindergarten into town life.
