Mason's Arms

Mason’s Arms

This project aimed to create two two-bedroom dwellings with good levels of daylight, while preserving the qualities of the existing façade structure. The Mason’s Arms is a three storey building located within a busy urban area with a mixed character. To preserve the positive qualities of the building and streetscape, minimal changes were made to the exterior, only to improve the energy efficiency of the building such as secondary glazing and refurbishment of external doors.

Through the use of split floor levels the scheme creates privacy for both living and sleeping spaces, while allowing for access to daylight and connections with the exterior. Because the Living rooms are at a lower level, they become quiet spaces for relaxing with good access to daylight but also with privacy from the East Street Market.

East Street

Given the character and appearance of the street scene within East Street we believe the building is of some architectural rarity being of its specific era in an area largely devoid of buildings of this age. It also has aesthetic interest within the street scene helping to provide a link to the past and a sense of place. The Masons Arms therefore plays a significant and positive part within the character and appearance of the street scene of East Street.
