Smichov Skola

Our idea is for a light-filled, 4-storey treasure chest for learning, social and community activity – an Exploratium. We propose a school around a calm, light-filled atrium space where students and teachers will find learning resources, displays and spaces for small-group learning. After-school spaces open into the town square and are also accommodated in a park-facing pavilion building. These two buildings enclose an arena for play, learning and sports with rich opportunities for education.

The new school can be approached by foot, bicycle or car and the main entrance to the school is on the new town square. Inside the building all levels are easily accessible even for those with impaired-mobility. On the left of the main entrance is the route to the Auditorium, Small and Large Gym Halls (with Changing, Storage and WCs) and Rooftop Sports Pitch. A separate staircase allows access to all these without the need to open up the rest of the school. From the pocket park to the north a night-time summer cinema can project onto the north elevation, and from the rooftop Prague Castle is clearly visible.
