The Highway

This mixed-use development is an imaginative and ambitious approach to building above a petrol filling station and responding to a small but important part of built heritage. Incorporating commercial and restaurant uses at ground level the proposals place a south-facing raised terrace garden on top of the filling station canopy and develop the residential units around this garden. With views of the Thames and benefits of tranquillity the apartments on the upper levels cary a high value.

The mansion block form was proposed as the best way of co-ordinating a variety of building types into a simple volume and reducing the overall height of the development. Expressing the vierendeel truss at podium level is a way of responding to the parapet height of the Old Rose public house, part of local history since the 16th century. The long northern elevation is given variety by varying the facade treatment where duplex units are used to maximise the fresh air and sunlight of the south-facing orientation.
